چکیده

Copper is present in different types of industrial effluents, being responsible for environmental pollution. Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The biomass of marine algae has been reported to have high uptake capacities for a number of heavy metal ions. In this paper, the adsorption properties of a pre-treated biomass of marine algae Fucus vesiculosus it was collected near Bushehr, Persian Gulf in Iran, for Cu (II) were investigated. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies were carried out for the biosorption of Cu (II) ions from aqueous solution using the algae brown biomass from batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir, Freundlich and DubininRadushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were applied to describe the biosorption of the Cu (II) ions onto FV biomass. The equilibrium time was about 340 min and the adsorption equilibrium data were well described by the Langmuir’s equation. Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity has been extrapolated to 1.85 mmol g. All these observations indicate that the Copper biosorption on FV is mainly based on ion exchange mechanism and this biomass could be then a suitable sorbent for the removal of heavy metals from wastewaters. This study demonstrated that the biomass of FV could be used as an effective biosorbent for the treatment of Copper (II) containing wastewater streams.

Characterization of the biosorption of cadmium, lead and copper with the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus.

The recovery of cadmium, lead and copper with the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus was characterized and quantified. The biosorption data fitted the pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm models, but did not adjust to the intraparticle diffusion model. The metal uptakes deduced from the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model followed a similar sequence: Cu>Cd approxima...

iosorption of cadmium, lead and copper with calcium alginate xerogels and mmobilized Fucus vesiculosus

This paper determines the effect of immobilized brown alga Fucus vesiculosus in the biosorption of heavy metals with alginate xerogels. Immobilization increased the kinetic uptakes and intraparticle diffusion rates of the three metals. The Langmuir maximum biosorption capacity increased twofold for cadmium, 10 times for lead, and decreased by half for copper. According to this model, the affini...

Biosorption of lead and nickel by biomass of marine algae.

Screening tests of different marine algae biomas types revealed a high passive biosorptive uptake of lead up to 270 mg Pb/g of biomass in some brown marine algae. Members of the order Fucales perfomed particularly well in this descending sequence: Fucus > Ascophyllum > Sargassum. Although decreasing the swelling of wetted biomass particles, their reinforcement by crosslinking may significantly ...

[Fucus vesiculosus induced hyperthyroidism in a patient undergoing concomitant treatment with lithium].

INTRODUCTION Fucus vesiculosus is a marine alga rich in iodine, which is being used in alternative medicine as a laxative, diuretic, and as a complement for weight loss diets. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 60-year old male patient, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and under treatment with lithium concomitantly with a herbal preparation, including Fucus vesiculosus, as a laxative. He deve...

Within-alga Integration and Compensation: Effects of Simulated Herbivory on Growth and Reproduction of the Brown Alga, Fucus Vesiculosus

We investigated the level of within-alga integration, the consequent ability to compensate for simulated herbivory, and the effect of nutrient availability on the ability to compensate in Fucus vesiculosus (L.). Although F. vesiculosus lacks vascular connections, resource translocation occurs on a local scale. Vegetative apical parts and reproductive structures were dependent on the resources p...
